Minelab WM-08 Teardown + signal problem solution

Sometimes users impose inefficiency – because of the sound latency – as a charge upon the Minelab WM-08 wireless module. First, have you seen the electronics inside? The WM-08 circuitry is more complicated than that of the XP Deus. Second, the problem lies not in latency but in signal loss (that is mistakenly taken for the delay). Third, read the manual. Here below are the pictures of disassembling the Minelab WM-08 wireless module. Plus, what problems can occur and how to solve them.

The Minelab WM-08 module doesn’t have a great delay (noticeable by human brain) during audio signal transmission. At least, there hasn’t been any confident confirmation of it yet. However, the module owners are giving this as their complaints.

The Minelab WM-08 problem is of another kind – the loss of signal that is mistakenly taken for latency. This is probably due to the fact that the WM-08 antenna is located near the battery and when in standard position this one acts as a screen.

What to do if the Minelab WM-08 has an issue. Read the user manual. The manufacturer advises that the WM-08 should be attached to the same side of your body as the detector (it’s clearly written in the manual). In such a way, your body won’t be an additional barrier through which the signal has to pass. Plus, a metal pocket zipper may serve as a hindrance to the transmitted signal. Thus it’s better to carry the module not in your pocket but on the cord (as shown in the first picture).

Interference. The wireless module is actually very sensitive to interference that may cause break up or a temporary loss of signal as well. You shouldn’t search in close proximity – closer than 100 meters – to power lines and transmitting antennas. However, the biggest source of interference for the Minelab WM-08 is your cell phone. It’s especially perceptible if you have mobile data (internet) turned On.

  • Hi,

The equinox itself is VERY VERY sensitive with GSM/Smartphones, even with a wire headphone.
We can’t detect on the beach (or somewhere else) with people around you, too much interference. I think it’s an big industrial failure would deserve a class action.

    Don’t buy equinox !

  • Hi
I do have breaks up and temporary loss of signals with my WM08 and Eq800 . For me my WM08 is almost unusable. I also have a Deus and everythings works perfectly with the Deus. I do not know where this WM08 pb comes from and that I agree that this is a big Failure.. I use the WM08 because my ML80 headphones are broken , more exactly the on/off swith is broken it seems to be fragile. Minelab is not serious providing devices with such a poor reliability. Thanks for your advices I will check if switching off my GSM solves the WM08 issue

  • I have a long time the equinox 800,and the eq is very good in all locations, the WM08 works nice with strong signal all the time…The Deus it’s a pour oponent beside Equinox 800..in the water..,in charging parts, Service,acuracy,materials,..etc..Deus it’s a toy.
